For all time, humanity has had the impulse to wear jewelry. What’s it all about, anyway? The forms, motifs and styling of jewelry speak of culture, uniquely reflecting events, forces and moods of a given time, place,… and people. How are we alike and how are we different? How did some of today’s jewelry shapes and forms originate? How is an ancient fertility pendant different from a hip hop chain? Cynthia Zava connects jewelry and culture with this inspiring multi-media look at the stylistic and fashion meanings behind jewelry and current trends that can be adapted to use in your store.

This blog talks about fashion trends and colored gemstones, using the Spectrum Awards as a multi-hued example. In our studio, colored gems are our lives’ work, not an ephemeral trend. Yet, it’s nice to see such widespread awareness of colored gems in the wider cullture. http://blog.rubylane.com/Trends+in+Fine+Jewelry+for+2011

Our new Lotus Ring blooms with a 26.89 carat Ametrine in our “origami-cut.” The lotus is 18 karat red gold and surrounds the Ametrine in a floral detailed basket; the shank is 18 karat yellow gold and subtly leaf textured. Cynthia Renee shanks have a round center with a slightly squared outer form so they don’t tip, better accomodate fluctuating finger sizes and are the most comfortable imaginable. Ametrine is a natural mixture of the gems amethyst and citrine found in only one mine in the world, the Anahi Mine, in Bolivia. Cynthia made several trips to that remote mine and has a nice supply of the rough gem.

The Origami cut is best seen on the opening video of my website: www.cynthiarenee.com I’d been playing with the cut for years, then our daughter made an origami with the same form and – viola – it became the Origami cut. What’s so interesting about Ametrine cut in this way is that it mixes the purple and yellow to create a changing landscape of lavender, umber, copper, purple and gold. As with a sunset, there’s never the same view twice and each Ametrine is uniquely colored.

It’s hard to resist photographing lotus flowers during trips in Asia. The lotus is an auspicious symbol in Buddhist teachings as its growth habit is a metaphor for the evolution of the human soul. The lotus roots begin in the mud, its stem grows up through the water and the lovely scented flower lies above the water basking in the sunlight. Us humans progress from the muddy material world, through the waters of life experience and into the bright sun of enlightenment.

Or, you can just wear it because it’s pretty! $5000
