When was the last time you wore a brooch? I bet there’s at least one tucked away in your jewelry box—a piece rich with meaning. Maybe it’s a gift from a loved one, a family heirloom, or something you fell in love with at first sight. Yet, it stays dormant, waiting….waiting…. Your jewelry collection is a trove of stories. With each jewel, you can revisit moments of joy, challenge, love, and legacy. Brooches can connect to family through legacies. Your great aunt with the flaming red hair who was so flamboyant and you were Her Special One? Get out her brooch and let the legacy of your auntie’s vitality and love light your life.

Styling Ideas

Often, clients tell me they’re unsure on how to wear their brooches. Here’s a little inspiration:

  • Group Small Brooches: One tiny pin may get lost on a jacket but becomes charming perched on the rolled-up cuff of a shirt.
  • The Eye Likes Odd: The eye likes odd numbers; consider groupings of three small pins.
  • Create Stories: Perhaps a collection of floral brooches connects you to the way you felt on that trip roaming the rural countryside and your love of nature?
  • Reimagine Placement: Try on a beret, grouped on a shoulder, a rolled-up cuff, at your collar, even as a pendant when its bayonet clips over a chain.

Brooches as Power Pieces

Brooches are also significant power pieces that declare,“Here I Am.” From royalty to rulers and even modern diplomats, brooches have been used to convey authority, strength, or even humor.Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright masterfully used her brooches as a diplomatic tool, conveying subtle messages about the status of negotiations through her choice of pins.
The "Faithful Companion" brooch/pendant features a hound head hand-carved from petrified wood, with a carnelian collar accented by a 0.50 carat radiant-cut Bronze Zircon dog tag; all set in 18 karat yellow gold.

In the context of Madam Albright’s jewelry language, a brooch like “The Faithful Companion,” (above) a hand-carved regal hound, could signal such things as “we’re hunting down a solution“, “have faith“, or “we are dogged in our stance“. Of course, it could also communicate, “you ain’t nothing but a hound-dog, lying’ all the time“. And while brooches can be your beautiful, lyrical companions, you may worry about damaging fabric or losing the pin. I understand that fear all too well—years ago losing a brooch that was gifted to me.
That’s why I’ve shared two simple hacks in my latest YouTube video that will keep your brooches safe and secure:

  • A clever rubber band trick for added stability
  • The MagnaPin solution for easy placement and protection

These easy tips will help you confidently wear your brooches, wherever your creativity takes you. Watch the video here for the full tutorial—and if you have a jewelry styling question, reply to this email. I’d love to hear from you!
