Mosaic is the art of creating images and patterns using tesserae, small pieces of glass, stone or other colorful materials. An ancient decorative skill, mosaics have been assembled since the second half of the third millennium BC, in Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome and Byzantium. Mid-Victorian Period jewelry features a lot of mosaics as it was fashionable to take a “Grand Tour” of Europe and bring back jewelry mementos from the Mediterranean countries.
Working on her gem mosaics, Cynthia Renee surrounds herself with a palette of hundreds of colored gemstones in various shapes and sizes. She then positions and repositions her gems until she achieves her vision…or the gems unlock theirs.
